Empowering Regional Voices: Rutherglen Silo Art
Back to Archive

In the heart of Victoria’s High Country, four towering grain silos in Rutherglen have been transformed into a sweeping tribute to seasonal rhythms, local ecology, and regional heritage. As part of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail enhancement project, artist Ronan Holdsworth was commissioned by Tourism Victoria  to create a large-scale mural series titled Birds of Seasons—a celebration of the native birdlife that quietly marks the changing seasons in the region.

Each silo tells a seasonal story, honouring the relationship between land, flora, fauna, and community. From the Pink Robin of Spring to the Yellow-tufted Honeyeater of Summer, the artwork draws on both natural and cultural motifs—intertwining native plants, golden harvests, and markings inspired by historical gold rush maps. These details form a rich visual narrative that speaks not only to the area’s beauty but also to the First Nations knowledge systems and farming traditions that have shaped the region over generations.

Mamam was proud to support the project throughtout the delivery, overseeing project logistics and installation to ensure things ran smoothly on-site. With the creative direction guided externally, it’s always a privilege to contribute to projects that bring public art into regional communities—especially when they centre artists who live and work within the area. While Ronan’s vibrant designs take centre stage, the broader story here is one of regional investment—of placing trust in a local artist to lead a significant public artwork in their own backyard.

More on the Artist

Ronan Holdsworth, who has been based in Wangaratta since 2018, is well known in the region for his commitment to socially engaged art and community wellbeing. His practice spans murals, exhibitions, and public art projects, all rooted in a deep connection to regional life. Forgoing spray cans in favour of brushes, brooms and texture-driven techniques, Ronan creates highly tactile, layered surfaces that bring a bold visual language to his storytelling.

A passionate advocate for mental health and epilepsy awareness, Ronan donates two murals annually to the Wangaratta region—using art as a tool for dialogue, education, and impact. His work champions local stories and continues to contribute to a broader legacy of regional public art that is grounded in place, people, and pride.
